How To Measure A Treadmill Belt

Tools Needed:

  • Regular Measuring Tape (preferably one that can measure several feet at a time)
  • Tape or Marker (to mark the treadmill belt)
  • Notebook and Pen (to record measurements for easy addition)

Measuring a Treadmill Belt On the Treadmill:

  1. Power Off the Treadmill: Ensure the treadmill is completely turned off and unplugged for safety.

  2. Mark the Starting Point: Use a piece of tape or a marker to create a clear starting point on the treadmill belt. This spot will serve as your reference point.

  3. Measure the First Section: Place the measuring tape on the treadmill belt, starting at the marked point. Measure as far as the tape allows, then note the measurement and mark the end of this section with another piece of tape or marker.

  4. Continue Measuring in Sections: Move the starting point to the end of the previous section. Measure the next segment of the belt and mark the new end point. Keep repeating this until you return to the original starting point.

  5. Add Up the Measurements: Add together all the individual section measurements to get the total length of the treadmill belt.

  6. Adjust for Roller Tightening: If the rear roller is tightened to its maximum position, you should subtract between 0.25 and 0.5 inches from the total length to ensure the belt won’t fit too loosely. This adjustment helps maintain the correct tension once the belt is installed.

  7. Double-Check Your Measurement: To verify accuracy, repeat the measuring process and compare the totals. If there are discrepancies, recheck for any measuring errors and correct them.

Measuring a Treadmill Belt Off the Treadmill:

  1. Remove the Treadmill Belt: Carefully follow your treadmill’s manual to remove the belt. This step will vary based on the treadmill model, so be sure to handle it safely and with care.

  2. Lay the Belt Flat: Place the treadmill belt on a large, flat surface. Ensure there are no twists or folds that could affect the measurement.

  3. Measure the Full Length: Use the regular measuring tape to measure the entire length of the belt from one end to the other. Make sure the tape is straight and not curved for accuracy.

  4. Double-Check Your Measurement: As before, measure a second time to confirm accuracy. If both measurements are very close, you can be confident in the total length.
